2020 NSORRA Hare Scramble Awards
464 competitors. 4 hare scrambles. A record 116 participants per event.
These numbers are impressive by themselves but when you consider these events were held during a pandemic, well…wow!
First up? Craigmore Ride Park
The 2020 Canadian Kawasaki Motors-NSORRA Hare Scramble season was late in starting with the first event cancelled and the second postponed thanks to COVID, but when things started up in August, KAPOW!
We started and ended the 2020 hare scramble season in Cape Breton. The weather was great for our first three events and appropriately challenging at Thistle Hurt.
Scramble 1 - Craigmore, sponsored by Honda Canada, kicked off the season in mid-August and proved to be an ever-popular event. It attracted members from all over Cape Breton as well as the mainland and even a few from New Brunswick and PEI.
MMMXP hosts Scramble 2 and Drive To Ride
Our second event, sponsored by Pro Cycle, was at Miller Meadow in mid-September and shared the weekend with the NSORRA Drive To Ride. The Saturday hare scramble included a few enduro features built into the course to allow riders to challenge themselves in a new way.
At Sunday’s Drive To Ride, members had the opportunity to chat with our fantastic sponsors and experience motocross track riding. A Trials competition opened the door to another dirt biking activity as well. This event also reinforced the family nature of NSORRA with participation from all age groups and skill levels.
South Alton for Scramble 3
Scramble 3, sponsored by Shore Cycle, was originally planned for Hiltz Road, but due to COVID and the space required to host an event during the pandemic, it was switched to South Alton which was originally scheduled to host Scramble 1 in June. Luckily, landowners Richard and Steve Parkinson jumped on board and ran an excellent event. Hats of to Hiltz Road landowner David Lacey for graciously understanding the reason for the switch.
Closing the season at Thistle Dew Farm
Thanksgiving weekend 2020 closed out the hare scramble season. Herb and Sharon Harnish put on a fantastic event at Thistle Dew Farm in cold and wet conditions. It was a challenging course that lead to a sense of achievement for the riders. It was followed by an equally popular hard enduro event that brought out the best riders from across the Maritimes.
Season highlights
-
We have fantastic volunteers! These races wouldn’t have happened without them volunteering to clear trails, setting up the scramble courses, handling registration, volunteering in timing and scoring, acting as sweepers and of course the NS Ski Patrol members who came out to support the events.
-
This season we had 16 PeeWees, five of them girls! Here are some future East Coast Women Offroad junior members!
-
We had 45 unique competitors in Plus 25 for a total of 93 racers over the four events. This was our biggest competitive group in 2020.
-
We added an Intermediate Women’s class and we registered 16 competitors at Miller Meadow between the two women’s classes!
-
We had four different competitors in the Vintage class with two of them competing in three of the four events.
2020 Hare Scramble Awards
The season was capped off by the Canadian Kawasaki Motors-NSORRA Hare Scramble Points Championship awards. Though COVID restrictions meant that only winners and their families could attend, we had a great turnout at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 90 in Waverley, NS.
Many thanks to sponsors Bill Brown from Canadian Kawasaki Motors and Jennifer Estabrooks from Soles In Motion for presenting the awards and to Keith Ramsey from Pro Cycle for stopping by to support the event!
