A sunny day and beautiful trails in the Wentworth Valley were the perfect combination for 40 NSORRA members to enjoy an intermediate rec ride in northern Nova Scotia.

Introducing New Ride Areas to our Members

NSORRA began offering recreational rides in 2020 to introduce our members to new trails and to provide an opportunity to meet other riders.

Riders met up at the NSORRA-Fundy Trails Dirt Bike Club, part of the Fundy Trails Snowmobile Club (FTSC) at Folly Lake on September 9, 2023. To kick off the ride, participants were given a first aid kit donated by the Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada - Off Road Council.

Participants chose whether they should go in the faster or slower groups but were later combined, as everyone was able to ride at an intermediate pace. Riders visited Swan Brook Falls, Deer Rock Lookoff and most took a shot at the Pine Climb.

No One Left Behind

With such a large group, it was important to keep track of riders, so a system was put in place. The lead rider stopped at every intersection and asked the next rider to stay put to direct the other riders down the correct trail. The sweep rider - called such as they ride “clean-up” at the end of the group on the trails - would then have this rider join the group once they met up.

Riders were told that if they thought they were lost, to stay put until someone found them. This system was adopted from the Ontario Federation of Trail Riders (OFTR) with great success.

Volunteers are the Key to Success!

Many volunteers make light work and lead to much enjoyment!

Scott Josey and Fred Eddy helped to map out the best trails for the event. The Swan family - David, Lukas, Jackson and Westley - helped guide the groups along with David Tobin and Rec Ride Director Neil Jennings. Several trained first aiders were available but luckily their skills were not needed.

The trails were in great shape thanks to over 900 volunteer hours put in by FTSC members clearing the trails after hurricane Fiona devastated the area in September 2022.

Thanks for coming out and remember to sign up for the Intermediate Hard Enduro Rec Ride also starting at the FTSC on 21 October 2023 if you feel up to the challenge!

Neil Jennings is the NSORRA Recreational Ride Director. If you have a trail area that you would like to invite NSORRA members to ride - from beginner to advanced - please reach out to Neil at neil.jennings@nsorra.ca
