Pre-season Decision
Pre-season, the Race Committee met and reviewed the hare scramble schedule. During the 2023 season, several racers dropped out of awards contention because they had to miss a scramble for personal reasons or injury. With five scrambles scheduled for 2024, we decided to offer a "best 4 of 5" to allow for more competitive classes and to give the best riders a fair chance.
We have since decided that this wasn't the best idea, because of reasons we could not have predicted: the Beaver Ride Park mid-day scramble races went sideways with several racers going the wrong way, and the Craigmore race was a wash for all mid-day classes as a result of a major accident.
How to Reduce Class Size?
Next, we decided to break up the Intermediate B class after the first 2024 scramble because it was too big. In order not to mess up the Timing and Scoring system by adding a new class, we decided to change the non-competitive Sportsman class to competitive for Scramble 2 going forward.
Unfortunately, the timing & scoring system, when computing overall results, did not skip the non-competitive race 1 for Sportsman so incorrect results were released. On top of this, the timing & scoring system eliminated racers from the series who did not receive any points. These were both fixed and now show in the system correctly.
It was a comedy of errors, but not something to be laughed at. NSORRA race volunteers have literally put in HOURS of volunteer time to try to straighten out the results, while fielding (sometimes angry) questions and discussions from racers.
Decision
After much discussion, the race committee decided to stick with the original commitment of scoring the 4 highest points of the 5 scrambles held for all classes. Because Craigmore #5 was unscored for the mid-day classes, the first 4 scrambles are the 4 highest scores. For Sportsmen, the class was not deemed competitive until Scramble 2, thus it will be scored on top 3 scores of 4 scrambles. Again, because of Craigmore #5 being unscored for mid-day, Scrambles 2-4 are the top 3 scores.
