Did you know? Dirt bike insurance is required by law in Nova Scotia
Off-highway vehicles may be fun, but they are not toys.
Accidents happen
When you are riding through the woods, enjoying nature, have you ever been so caught up that you miss that tree or big rock in the path? Have you come upon riders unexpectedly riding the same trail in the opposite direction and towards you?
Often you can laugh off these mishaps, but sometimes these situations lead to serious accidents. If you or someone you hit is injured in an accident which leads to time off work or worse and you don't have insurance coverage, you could be in for a world of hurt in your wallet.
Insurance requirement in place since 2009
Nova Scotia residents operating off-highway vehicles on land they do not own or occupy must carry a motor vehicle liability policy. Coverage required includes third-party liability, accidental benefits and under-insured or non-insured coverage. The minimum amount of liability insurance required is $500,000 as specified in the Insurance Act.
In addition to the risk of injury, off-highway vehicles can do serious environmental damage, destroy crops, or harm private property. The restrictions placed on the use of off-highway vehicles are intended to lessen the potential for injury or property damage, without depriving responsible operators and their families of the benefits and pleasures of using off-highway vehicles.
