A sunny day after weeks of rain and 10 women on dirt bikes ready for a rec ride. It doesn’t get any better than this!
First Women’s Rec Ride of the Season
NSORRA Women In Moto held their first recreational ride and barbecue social for the season on July 2nd, 2023. Sponsored by Liberty CC, the ride was hosted by Susan and Patrick Foote on their personal trail system in the Annapolis Valley, where 10 female riders hit the trails with bikes ranging from 85 to 300 cc.
The morning started with a brief safety meeting and a large thank you to Susan and Patrick for their time and efforts in trail building. NSORRA race t-shirts were presented as thank you gifts and were much appreciated.
Introductions were made and a course/direction was set for the ride. The group opted to start with the northern portion of the Foote compound which included a variety of terrain. Rocks, roots and hills were some of the obstacles tackled.
Hitting the Trails
The highlight of the morning was a wooded ravine fitted with steep sides, rocky stream and, due to the previous week’s weather, slimy, loose ground.
Descent into the ravine went smoothly with guidance from Sue. Once at the bottom, riders followed a trail that ran along the side of a stream and then lined up to climb the slope to exit the opposite side.
After the first few attempts to get further than halfway up the hill, it was determined that a “freestyle” approach could be the best solution to get everyone to the top.
Some riders took a direct approach, conquering the hill with clutch control and steady throttle. Others made their way diagonally from side to side, finding traction in new lines that had never been ridden.
Teamwork and positive attitudes bested the obstacle and although tired, participants agreed they felt accomplished and motivated.
Time to Celebrate!
The morning concluded with a BBQ social in the Foote’s backyard. There is definite interest in planning additional recreational rides. We also had a suggestion about hosting a two-day event, where riders would have the opportunity to camp overnight.
This WIM rec ride event was very well received and participants are eager to participate in future events. If you identify as female and are interested in rec rides and hare scrambles, contact Women In Moto Director Paige Milligan at paige.milligan@nsorra.ca.
