Tips for Off-Road Safety Month
As dirt bike enthusiasts get ready to explore Canada’s vast trails, Moto Canada highlights the importance of safety by sharing vital tips and resources with off-road motorcycle users.
Driven by Canada’s scenic beauty and the increasing popularity of off-road recreation, the Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) industry is experiencing rapid growth. According to the latest study, spearheaded by Moto Canada and its partners, there are currently 1.35 million Off-Highway Vehicle users in Canada.
“Our industry is strong in Canada, and we look forward to continuing our work to ensure that riders can continue riding safely,” President and CEO Landon French said. “Almost all of the factors which contribute to rider injuries are simple, preventable measures that everyone can apply to have a fun, safe time.”
Gear Up Properly: Always wear appropriate safety gear, including helmets, gloves, eye protection, and riding boots.
Inspect Your Bike: Before hitting the trails, thoroughly inspect your off-road vehicle for any mechanical issues, ensuring brakes, tires, and lights are all in working order.
Stay Informed: Be aware of your skill level and the capabilities of your bike. Only attempt challenging trails or maneuvers within your experience level.
Know Your Limits: Research your off-road destination beforehand. Know the terrain, weather forecast, and any local regulations or restrictions.
Be Prepared for Emergencies: Know how to handle off-road emergencies such as getting stuck, vehicle breakdowns, or injuries. Have a plan and know how to signal for help if needed.
Buddy Up: Go riding with at least one other rider whenever possible. This ensures you have backups in emergencies and can assist each other if needed.
Pack Essentials: Carry essential items such as water, food, a first-aid kit, a map, and a communication device (like a two-way radio or satellite phone).
Respect Nature: Stay on designated trails to protect the environment and prevent habitat destruction. Avoid disturbing wildlife and leave no trace of your visit.
Ride Safely: Ride at a safe speed, maintain a safe distance from other bikes, and use caution when navigating obstacles. Avoid sudden movements that could lead to accidents.
Practice Good Trail Etiquette: Yield to other trail users, including hikers, bicycles, and equestrians. Be courteous and respectful of others sharing the trail.
